3D Fiber Optic Display

Summary

A dynamically controlled fiber optic display made of 400 rods, designed to visualize images driven by computer vision.

K-12 Learning Goals

Inspire curiosity about computing, perception, and robotics through a striking visual demo.

Undergraduates Learning

Mechanical + electrical build, prototype iteration, and the connection between computer vision and physical output.

Overview

Undergraduates are creating a dynamically controlled fiber optic display. This requires mechanical, electrical, and data science experience. Under the guidance of Professor Haojian Jin, students are 3D printing prototypes to control 400 fiber optic rods with stepper motors. The images displayed are ultimately going to be controlled using computer vision.

Demo Details

  • Technology: Fiber optics + stepper motors + 3D printing + computer vision
  • Experience: Real-time shifting 3D light display
  • Educational Value: Connects vision → computation → motion
  • Best For: All-ages inspiration demos (lab tours/open house)
